SPEAKER – MONICA THORNTON – WIT OF GEORGIA
Monica is a results-driven leader amongst Atlanta’s competitive fundraising and marketing professionals, offering more than 20 years of a successful business development, brand management, public relations, and community engagement track-record. She also has substantial experience in strategic planning, coaching and public speaking and has been sought out for a host of national and local panels, including Park Pride, City Park’s Alliance, Kennesaw State University, and The Women’s International Think Tank.
Monica currently serves as the Executive Director for Women in Technology (WIT), a non-profit whose mission is to serve as passionate advocates for advancing girls and women in Georgia’s technology and business communities. Prior to joining WIT in September 2013, Monica served as the SVP/Chief Marketing and Development Officer at Piedmont Park Conservancy since 2005. There she led the organization’s marketing and development initiatives, a $42 Million capital campaign, logo and website redesign, creation of a pace –setting corporate giving program, sponsorship sales, media buys and many other efforts; all while directing its frontline communications effort. She has also held leadership positions at United Way of Metro Atlanta, Fox 5 Atlanta, CBS Atlanta, WSB-TV and Georgia Public Broadcasting, where she continues to volunteer as a spokesperson during live telethons.
Monica holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgia State University in TV/Film and an Associate’s degree in Marketing. She has served on the board on TEAM Georgia and is a member of several professional organizations, including Public Relations Society of America, Association for Fundraising Professionals, National Association for Women and Women in Film. She also has a passion for writing and has just finished a children’s book.
Responsible for either specific functional areas on client(s) accounts, or responsible for overall operations for smaller size client(s), which may include events, communication, business development, membership marketing, governance, finances, strategic plans, and/or other specific projects. Reports to a Sr. Director or AMBU VP and may manage and mentor other staff.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities/knowledge
Manages operations of WIT and WIT Foundation which includes governance, tax filings, legal requirements, budget oversight, strategic planning, and/or development and execution of their business plans. Achieves association(s) metrics including financial performance related to their mission. Supports volunteers in their various roles pertaining to assigned projects or functional areas. Manages and/or mentors staff which includes providing feedback, reviewing performance, directing work, delegating and motivation. Ensures compliance with association(s) specific policies. Supports the overall goals and objectives of the WIT and the WIT Foundation through additional responsibilities as required.
