Keynote Speaker: Julie Ezold– Program Manager at Oak Ridge National Lab

Engineering and Contributing to the STEM Conversation

Ms Ezold will present information related to her current role as ORNL Program Manager for coordinating the Department of Energy Isotope Program with industry and how her work and community involvement helps stimulate student interest in STEM. The ORNL Isotope program is responsible for the production, material fabrication, and distribution of stable and radioactive isotopes for the Department of Energy and many other federal and commercial customers. Examples of industrial applications of the ORNL-produced isotopes include on-line monitoring of coal, cement and other materials; analysis of fissile and transuranic material waste; and measurement of corrosion on bridges and highway infrastructure. Some current areas of focus also include expanding the isotopes available for targeted alpha and beta-emitting therapies such as those used for cancer treatment.

Ms Ezold actively supports nuclear science educational activities through the Nuclear Science and Technology Interaction Program. She is involved in K-2 Science Club, Mentor Program, and many other STEM activities. In recognition for here efforts she was awarded the 2007 UT-Battelle Awards Night for Exceptional Community Outreach and in 2009 she received the Patricia Bryant Leadership Award from US Women in Nuclear. Her presentation at this banquet is designed to inspire engineers and technical professionals to make engineers week a priority in our community.

Ms Ezold received her BS in Nuclear Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and completed her MS in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University. Her master research was conducted at the High Flux Isotope Reactor at ORNL. Her work experience included engineering, waste management, criticality safety, and isotope production.
