04 May ChaTech and BCBST Collaborate on Summer Code Camp for Youth
ChaTech and BlueCross Blue Shield of Tennessee (BCBST) are collaborating to host a coding camp for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students. The weeklong event will be held Monday, July 17 – Friday, July 21 at the downtown campus of the health insurance company. This is the third year that ChaTech and BCBST have worked together to offer a computer coding experience for students.
“Every year, we tweak the program a little based on what we learn as we go along,” said Stuart Dickerson, ChaTech board member and organizer of the camp. “But the essentials stay the same: we give students hands-on experience with basic computer programming using a web application. This provides a great exercise in logical thinking and problem solving skills. We provide some instruction in the theory behind computer coding so students get an understanding of the bigger picture behind the projects we use.”
There is also a career awareness component to the camp. Throughout the week, professional web developers will interact with the students to talk about their jobs and different careers in the computer science industry. At the end of the week, students will present a “Demonstration Day” for parents.
The camp is funded by ChaTech and BCBST making participation FREE for students who enroll. The camp will run Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. BlueCross BlueShield will provide lunch and snacks, and they will also supply laptops for student use during the week.
Students may apply for the camp online at ChaTechCouncil.org/summer-of-code-camp/. Any student may apply, but preference will be given to public school students and first time participants.
