BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and the Chattanooga Technology Council are hosting a week-long summer camp.
It’s aimed at teaching students the fundamentals of artificial intelligence programming.
“We’re working with them to introduce some of them to code for the first time. Some of them have already had a little bit of exposure. We want to grow on that exposure and give them some real life hands on experience.
They are also making chat bots. These allow the students to have an interactive robot that can talk with them, and respond to certain questions.
It might sound like hard work, but camp goers seem to really enjoy it.
“I’ll keep doing it because it’s pretty cool and the world needs a lot of jobs looking for this kind of stuff.”
And he’s right.. Instructors say there are currently more jobs in the tech industry than can be filled.. So this type of career is full of opportunity.
“Hopefully we get some of them to catch the programming bug and follow through on that through their high school careers and college. And then there will be jobs waiting for them. There are jobs right now I’d hire some of them today if I could.”
Some students hope their schools will take part in more educational programs like these.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and the Chattanooga Technology Council (CHATECH) are hosting a week-long summer camp aimed at teaching students the fundamentals of artificial intelligence programming.
Over the five days, more than two dozen 7th, 8th, and 9th graders will learn how to develop a chatbot – a program that can simulate conversation with a human user using artificial intelligence. The students will learn some basic programming to help their bots react to different inputs, and will also have training on tools to help their bots ‘learn’ and retain knowledge.
On Friday, the student coders will present their work to their parents and a panel of judges from the BlueCross information services leadership team, who will select winners in a variety of categories.
